This weekend is the biggest draft weekend of the year. Here are some tips on Draft Day and my Top 160 position players.

5 Tips for Draft Day

  1. Double Check The Rules – Every league is different, so it’s important to cross check any rankings list against your league. It can be subtle, but PPR is different than Standard scoring. Plus, some leagues give extra points to say TEs for receptions over WRs and RBs.
  2. ADP vs. Rankings – ADP or Average Draft Position is based on that site’s drafting over the course of months. ADPs can be slanted to drafts done early in the summer and then normalize as the summer goes on. Most people will simply pull up the league list, which will likely be based on ADP. I suggest either following an expert’s rankings or make your own. I have my Top 160 and use that for my drafts. I cross check in against the site’s list and experts, but I want my own picks on Draft Day.
  3. Ignore Bye Weeks – A lot of people worry about Bye Weeks when they make their picks. I get the risk, but in reality the first Bye Week does not show up until Week 5. Who knows what will happen in the first 4 weeks with injuries, performances that change depth charts and scheduled matchups. So, you can always hit the wire to pick up a missing player. The likelihood of having 4-5 players on Bye at once is pretty small unless you are stacking an entire team. I suggest not even worrying about it on Draft Day.
  4. Pick Your Players – You have 14-16 chances to pick players in a Draft. When you are drafting, you want to like your team. So, when in doubt if you have a decision between 2 players from an expert ranking or your own list, be sure to pick the player you want to see play every week. The same goes with positions at the beginning or end of the snake draft. If you think the player will not be there in 15-27 picks when you select again, then take your guy. Some will call that a reach, but the truth is as long as you are not going a 2 rounds early, then you will be ok.
  5. Save the Kickers and Defense – I’ll say this every year, please do not draft a Kicker or Defense until your last 2 picks (unless your league settings require 2 each). You can always stream a Kicker or Defense, so just pick a D that has a good match up and a Kicker in a high power offense. You’ll be ok.

McCaffery May Be #1, But Will Be The Top Producer Again

Note, the Brandon Aiyuk watch is on with the WAS move to Philly this morning. His stock would rise in my view, so I’ll update if that ever comes through – my current WR21 to probably WR13 or so inside the Top 30.

Good luck on Draft Day.
