Sometimes you have a week where things go off the rails. Well, Week 4 was nuts – only 4 of 15 home teams won games. There were so many road wins, that it took the last 2 games to get to 4 – 11 as two of the first 13 games were won by home teams.
Week 4 Review
- Pats Survive Bills Slugfest – The Pats have been cruising all season with the top rated defense. However, the Bills have a defense, too. The Bills held QB Tom Brady in check – 150 yards, 0 TDs and 1 INT. Yet, they still got the win, 16-10, with a punt block and TD that turned out to be the difference.
- Browns Roll Ravens – The Browns went to Baltimore and simply nuked the Ravens with 530 yards of total offense. RB Nick Chubb ran for 165 and 3 TDs, while QB Baker Mayfield passed for 342 and 1 TD in the 40-25 win.
- Bucs Light Up Rams in LA – The Bucs’ offense is hitting on all cylinders now, as QB Jameis Winston has back to back stellar performances – this time passing for 385 yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT. The Rams tried to keep up, as Jared Goff threw for 517 yards himself, but this high scoring affair was never in doubt, 55-40.
- Minshew Magic Is A Thing – The Jags may have found their QB of the futures, as Gardner Minshew has been making this team competitive every week. In this one, trailing the Broncos 17-3, the Jags fed RB Leonard Fournette 225 yards rushing, but it was Minshew who led a game winning drive in the final minutes to give the Jags the win, 26-24.
- Cam Who? – QB Kyle Allen goes to 2-0 as the starter, despite fumbling 3 times and throwing for just 232 yards. That Carolina defense beat up Texans’ QB Deshaun Watson, sacking him 6 times. The Panthers won 16-10.
- Injuries – There were several injuries in Week 4 – QB Josh Allen, BUF, Concussion; DE Bradley Chubb, DEN, Torn ACL (out for the year); DT Kawaan Short, CAR, Shoulder (IR); QB Mitch Trubisky, CHI, Shoulder; OT Tyron Smith, DAL, Ankle; RB Marlon Mack, IND, Ankle; K Stephen Gostkowski, NE, Hip (IR).

Top 5:
- Patriots – Still the class of the league on Defense Yards and Points Against, plus +6 Turnover Differential.
- 49ers – Maybe helped to sit out last week in all the craziness.
- Cowboys – Even after a loss, the Cowboys’ Defense not yielding a TD at NO keeps them in the Top 3.
- Rams – Their defense let up last week (and again tonight…), yet that offense is starting to heat up.
- Chiefs – That offense looked a bit stymied in Detroit, but a late drive got them the win. Still #1 in Offense in the NFL.
Week 5 Preview
- Bucs at Saints (-3, Total 46.5) – Sunday, October 6th at 1 PM Eastern/12 Noon Central on FOX – The Bucs enter the game on fire on offense, while the Saints defense played great on Sunday Night. I think the Bucs will relish the chance to take on the Saints without Brees and prevent a 3 game win streak in the Super Dome. Bucs will win S/U covering the spread and Over 46.5.
- Bills at Titans (-3, Total 38.5) – Sunday, October 6th at 1 PM Eastern/12 Noon Central on CBS – A low key Wild Card battle in early October in Nashville here, the winner will gain a big game in the tiebreaker category. I like the Bills if QB Josh Allen plays, but if not, the Titans will win S/U, Cover -3 and Under 38.5 (2 very tough defenses here).
- Packers at Cowboys (-3.5, Total 47) – Sunday, October at 4:25 PM Eastern/3:25 PM Central on FOX – The feature NFL day game (as there are only 2 games in the late time slot – bad scheduling) pits 2 division leaders in GB and DAL. The Pack have played better defensively this year, but the only way they get this one is with a weakened Cowboys’ O-line – both Tyron Smith and Lael Collins are questionable. I still like the Cowboys to win S/U, Cover -3.5 and Under the 47.
- Browns at 49ers (-4, Total 46.5) – Monday, October 7th at 8:15 PM Eastern/7:15 PM Central on ESPN – The 49ers are top of the Index, but even with the bye, I think the Browns are a step up in class of opponent. The 49ers defense will be tested both on the ground and through the air. I like the Browns to win S/U and Cover, Total Over 46.5.
Sorry for missing last week (and my draft last night got erased). Enjoy the games this week.
